Joan Beatrice Layne, age 76, passed away on Thursday, September 9, 2021, after a 5-year battle with Dementia. She was born on March 17, 1945, in Frank, West Virginia to Clyde and Alma (Cassell) Mick and was the second oldest of five children.

Joan was a 1963 graduate of Glen Burnie High School in Glen Burnie, Maryland. After graduating from high school, she attended the University of Maryland in College Park, Maryland and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Russian. Following her graduation, she worked as a Russian Linguist at the Department of Defense until her retirement and during that time, worked towards her Master's at George Washington University. She met her husband, Gerald Edwin Layne (deceased September 19, 2003) at the Department of Defense and they married on March 11, 1967. Together, they had one son, Sean Fitzgerald Layne. Joan enjoyed dedicating her time to the church as a Stephens Minister, spending time with friends and family, playing cards, golfing, and loving on her mini dachshund, Kiki.

She is survived by her son, Sean, daughter-in-law, Michelle, grandson's, Braden and Brett, and brothers, Bill (Betty) Mick, Ron (Vicky) Mick, Roland (Rhonda) Witt and their families. She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Gary, and husband Jerry.

Joan will be remembered as a bright, shining light in the various churches she served. She nourished people around her with love and faith.
